In Southwest Finland, the focus of development is on management of natural and cultural metalliNaantalin satamaenvironments, promotion of expertise in support of economic activity, and on the combination of multimode transport facilities into an entity serving Northern Europe.

Additional research facilities are being established in the region, facilities for developing high-tech industries are being provided with new construction, and the competitiveness of traditional industry is being improved by increasing the amount of knowledge capital.

Specific aspects of developmental activities are the creation of occasionally hard-to-define operational modes, updating of co-operative structures and utilising new technologies in existing traditional production industries. In practice one thus learns new ways of doing things, creating something new by combining it with the old. The end result is an unparalleled level of expertise characteristic to the region.
